This is a full-time position with the Department of the Military. For more information on the Department of the Military, please visit http://military.sd.gov/ .

The successful incumbent will prepare permanent, temporary, and traveling exhibits; collects, preserves, and determines significance of South Dakota National Guard state museum collections; and develops and provides educational programs and research to interpret, display, and provide reference resources about South Dakota National Guard's heritage for visitors, scholars, and the general public.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
BA-BS or MS History or Museum Studies.

Knowledge of:
  • South Dakota National Guard/Military history and geography;
  • museum philosophy, professional practices, and ethics;
  • museum registration systems and collections management procedures;
  • exhibit design principles, methods, and practices;
  • educational resources;
  • research methodology.

Skills to:
  • conduct detailed research by effectively using libraries, archives, online databases, and interviews to gather and synthesize information;
  • safely and effectively operate power tools, photographic equipment, and graphic design software for the purpose of exhibit fabrication, installation, and the creation of supporting visual materials;
  • document historic events of the South Dakota National Guard.

Ability to:
  • conduct research;
  • communicate effectively with strong writing skills to produce clear, concise, and engaging written materials, including exhibit labels, educational content, grant proposals, and professional correspondence;
  • follow instructions;
  • deal tactfully with and interact with people and organizations;
  • creatively complete work plans and projects;
  • organize collections.

This position is eligible for Veterans' Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
