Paving Superintendent – Job Description
Overview
The Paving Superintendent oversees and manages all field operations for asphalt paving projects, ensuring that work is completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within quality standards. This role requires hands-on leadership to coordinate crews, subcontractors, equipment, and materials while maintaining strong communication with project managers and clients.
Key Responsibilities
Field Operations
Direct and supervise paving crews and subcontractors in daily operations.
Oversee all aspects of asphalt paving including grading, compaction, and finishing.
Ensure projects meet specifications, quality standards, and client expectations.
Monitor equipment usage and coordinate maintenance needs.
Conduct daily site inspections to ensure safety, quality, and productivity.
Scheduling & Coordination
Develop and manage daily/weekly paving schedules in coordination with the Project Manager.
Plan material deliveries and equipment mobilization to align with production goals.
Adjust work plans to accommodate weather, traffic, or site conditions.
Coordinate traffic control measures and site logistics for safe and efficient operations.
Safety & Compliance
Enforce company and OSHA safety regulations on all job sites.
Conduct daily safety briefings and toolbox talks.
Ensure compliance with environmental and DOT regulations.
Maintain required safety documentation and incident reports.
Communication & Reporting
Serve as the primary field contact for clients, inspectors, and engineers.
Communicate progress, challenges, and needs with the Project Manager.
Maintain daily job logs including crew hours, equipment usage, and material quantities.
Assist in change order documentation and issue resolution.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering preferred but not required).
Experience: 5–10 years of paving and asphalt construction experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
Technical Skills:
In-depth knowledge of asphalt paving techniques, equipment, and materials.
Ability to read and interpret civil drawings and paving specifications.
Familiarity with project management and field reporting tools (e.g., Procore, HCSS, or similar).
