Position Title: Prevention Specialist
Reports To: Program Director & Prevention Coordinator
Customary Work Hours: Full-Time – 40 Hours/Week
Customary Work Days: Monday – Friday, some evenings and weekends required
Salary Range: $23-24 an hour + an excellent benefits package
POSITION SUMMARY:
Prevention Specialist is responsible for working closely with the community in decreasing underage drinking and addressing marijuana use among youth, in collaboration with the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Health, Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC). The Prevention Specialist assists in coordinating, building capacity, and facilitating community outreach prevention programs. Raises awareness related to marijuana use and underage alcohol drinking in the community. Coordinates with community organizations and stakeholders to develop and offer outreach programs, and works towards making a positive impact on the community through various awareness programs in the Van Nuys and Santa Clarita areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Facilitate evidence-based drug prevention education classes in various school settings to student groups (middle school, high school, and youth groups).
Research and develop health communication materials, including flyers, brochures, infographics, social media posts, PowerPoint presentations, and videos (in Spanish as needed).
Facilitate drug educational presentations to adult and youth groups in community settings in a professional manner to bring awareness to drug issues (in Spanish as needed).
Collaborate in the development and facilitation of prevention activities and outreach related to underage drinking and youth marijuana use in school and community settings.
Maintain an organized planner and accurately complete program activity backups to properly document all activities, ensuring compliance with LA County on time.
Work directly with community stakeholders, school faculty and administration, and community members during school events or program activities to provide quality prevention services.
Support alcohol and marijuana misuse efforts through organizational and/or coalition projects by conducting outreach and meeting with local businesses, and complete required reporting.
Support the collection of evaluation data and social media metrics required for reports.
Attend and participate in community meetings, and uphold the professional representation of the Council.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in public health or related field of study preferred. At least 1 year of experience working in the field of substance use, public health, or community organizing.
Strong presentation, written, and documentation skills (communication skills)
Bilingual capacity – (Spanish preferred)
Strong organization skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
Strong team collaboration skills and willingness to participate fully in a team process
Demonstrated competence in computers, Microsoft Office Suite, and graphic design websites.
