Job Description

Certification Required: Registered Nurse licensed to practice professional nursing in South Dakota.

Education Required: A Bachelor of Science in nursing is required.

BASIC FUNCTION/PURPOSE OF POSITION: School nurses strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children and assistance in the removal or modification of health-related barriers to the learning process. The major focus of school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems by implementing health screenings and providing health education. The School Nurse works collaboratively with the Health Services and Education team to develop individualized health care plans (IHP) and emergency action plans (EAP) to consistently align with safe practices, program procedures, and district policy.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

A. Provide first aid and emergency care for students and staff in case of illness or accident

B. Administer medications as ordered following the guidance of SD BON and the Nurse Practice Act

C. Develop and implement appropriate aspects of the strategy of care and treatment plan as outlined in the Individualized Health Care Plan and Emergency Action Plan

D. Participate as the health team specialist during evaluation for and development of IEP and 504 plans for students with medical needs

E. Promote and provide health assessments and health screenings

F. Attend to the physical needs of the student(s), including moving, positioning, assisting with personal hygiene needs

G. Obtain, review, and document health records and developmental history

H. Evaluate and interpret cumulative health data to accommodate individual needs of student(s)

I. Document daily visits, medication administration, phone calls, and data entry

J. Initiate referrals to parents, school personnel and community health resources for intervention, remediation, and follow-through

K. Facilitate collaboration and communication between interdisciplinary team members to meet students’ goals

L. Delegate nursing duties and supervise delegated nursing duties as outlined under the Nurse Practice Act and South Dakota Law

M. Maintain safe and effective nursing practice that complies with federal, state, and district policies and procedures

N. Maintain current immunization records and provide recommended immunizations as prescribed by the State of South Dakota

O. Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases

P. Utilize PPE properly and follow isolation practices as needed for infectious conditions

Q. Provide health education, contacting and counseling parents/guardians regarding health problems

R. Contact parents, guardians, emergency contacts and/or agencies as appropriate

S. Assist and maintain a clean and healthy environment at assigned site

T. Assist in keeping health room supplies stocked

U. Maintain confidentiality and abide by HIPAA and FERPA regulations

V. Communicate and work with all school staff in a team approach

W. Contribute to the organization and completion of annual health emergency educational trainings

X. Act as a liaison agent to local, state, and national health agencies for assigned school(s)

Y. Respond constructively to supervision

Z. Attend Building and Health Services Department meetings as required

AA. Participate in ongoing professional growth activities
