Job Description

Precision Lawn & Landscape is seeking an experienced Senior Decking and Fencing Installer to construct high-quality residential and commercial decks and fences throughout the Fargo–Moorhead and surrounding area.

The primary focus of this position will be deck construction. The employee will also assist with fencing projects and receive hands-on training in wood, vinyl, chain-link, ornamental and other fencing systems.

This is a hands-on installation position for an experienced carpenter or deck builder who can complete advanced construction tasks with limited supervision. The Senior Installer will work under the direction of a Decking or Fencing Foreman and help maintain jobsite quality, safety and productivity.

The employee may occasionally provide task-level direction and hands-on guidance to one or two less-experienced crew members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Deck Construction

  • Construct residential decks using treated lumber, cedar, composite and PVC decking products.
  • Complete deck framing, blocking, decking, stairs, landings, railings and finish details.
  • Install footings, posts, beams, joists, ledger boards, flashing and structural connections.
  • Accurately lay out deck components and complete cuts, measurements and material calculations.
  • Install composite decking and railing products in accordance with manufacturer requirements.
  • Identify construction concerns, site conditions and potential project changes and communicate them to the assigned foreman.
  • Complete work that meets company standards, project specifications and applicable building requirements.
  • Inspect completed work and correct workmanship issues as directed.

Fence Installation

  • Assist with the installation of wood, vinyl, chain-link, ornamental and other fencing systems.
  • Learn proper fence layout, property-line awareness, post spacing and elevation management.
  • Assist with locating, digging and setting fence posts.
  • Install fence panels, rails, pickets, fabric, gates and related hardware.
  • Learn to assemble, hang and adjust gates for proper operation.
  • Operate post-hole augers and other fencing tools and equipment safely.
  • Develop the skills necessary to independently complete increasingly advanced fencing tasks.
  • Assist fencing crews as workload and scheduling needs require.

Jobsite Leadership and Training

  • Work closely with the assigned foreman to complete projects safely, efficiently and according to plan.
  • Provide hands-on instruction and task-level guidance to less-experienced employees when assigned.
  • Demonstrate proper installation methods, tool use and safe work practices.
  • Help maintain a productive pace and keep assigned crew members focused on their work.
  • Communicate employee performance, safety or quality concerns to the assigned foreman.
  • Support the foreman without assuming responsibility for employee discipline, hiring, scheduling or formal performance management.
  • Help create a positive, professional and accountable jobsite environment.

General Responsibilities

  • Read and follow project plans, measurements, layouts and manufacturer installation instructions.
  • Safely operate saws, drills, impact drivers, nailers, compact equipment and other construction tools.
  • Load, unload, transport and organize tools, equipment and construction materials.
  • Monitor material usage and notify the foreman when additional materials may be needed.
  • Maintain clean, organized and professional jobsites.
  • Protect customer property, landscaping, buildings and other improvements during construction.
  • Communicate professionally with customers, coworkers, subcontractors and members of the public.
  • Follow company policies, safety procedures and applicable construction requirements.
  • Assist other company divisions or crews when workload and scheduling require.
  • Perform other construction-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • At least three years of deck construction, framing, finish carpentry or residential construction experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently complete advanced deck-installation tasks.
  • Experience constructing deck framing, stairs, railings and finished decking surfaces.
  • Willingness and ability to learn fencing installation and work across both decking and fencing projects.
  • Ability to accurately use a tape measure, level, square and other layout tools.
  • Ability to understand and follow construction plans, measurements and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to safely operate common carpentry and construction tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Ability to identify construction issues and communicate them promptly.
  • Dependable attendance and ability to report to work and jobsites on time.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a crew.
  • Professional communication skills and a positive attitude.
  • Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five or more years of deck-building, framing or residential carpentry experience.
  • Previous experience installing residential or commercial fencing.
  • Experience installing composite decking and railing products such as Trex, TimberTech or Deckorators.
  • Experience constructing complex stairs, multi-level decks or custom railing systems.
  • Familiarity with residential deck and fence construction requirements.
  • Experience training, mentoring or directing entry-level construction employees.
  • Experience operating skid steers, mini skid steers, augers or similar equipment.
  • OSHA, first-aid, equipment-operation or other relevant safety training.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong working knowledge of deck framing and residential carpentry techniques.
  • Ability to produce accurate, clean and visually appealing finished work.
  • Ability to measure, calculate, lay out and construct projects accurately.
  • Ability to troubleshoot routine construction challenges.
  • Ability to learn new products, installation methods and construction trades.
  • Ability to balance productivity with safety and workmanship.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

  • Regularly lift and carry materials weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb and reach throughout the workday.
  • Perform repetitive lifting, cutting, fastening, digging and material-handling activities.
  • Safely work from ladders and elevated deck structures.
  • Work outdoors in heat, cold, wind, rain and other varying weather conditions.
  • Work on uneven ground and active residential construction sites.
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools and construction equipment.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment.

Work Environment

This position is primarily performed outdoors at residential and commercial jobsites. The employee will regularly work around construction tools, equipment, dust, noise, uneven surfaces and changing weather conditions.

Work hours may vary based on project schedules, weather and seasonal demand. Overtime and occasional weekend work may be required during peak periods.
